Alaska Earthquake Center Reports Magnitude 5.0 Event Near Atka

    August 10, 2026

ATKA, ALASKA / RankWire.AI / – On Saturday evening, a magnitude 5.0 earthquake occurred close to Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, with its epicenter positioned southeast of Atka. The Alaska Earthquake Center recorded the tremor at 7:36 p.m. Alaska Daylight Time on August 8, which corresponds to 03:36 UTC on August 9. The seismic event took place approximately 48 miles, or 77 kilometers, southeast of Atka, at a depth of roughly 17 kilometers, or 10.6 miles, according to scientists.

Alaska earthquake reaches magnitude 5.0 near Atka
Seismic networks recorded the magnitude 5.0 earthquake near Atka, Alaska.

The event’s coordinates place it at 51.8286 degrees north and 173.2496 degrees west. Situated on Atka Island within the Aleutian chain, the area is distant from Alaska’s primary population centers. The quake also occurred southwest of Seguam Island and Amukta Pass, with Mount Sergief and several other islands located in the vicinity. This location situates the seismic activity within one of Alaska’s most active earthquake zones, where seismic events of varying depths are frequent.

Compared to many other seismic activities in the region, the magnitude 5.0 earthquake near Alaska was relatively shallow. The seismicity reflects the ongoing interaction of major tectonic plates beneath the North Pacific. Specifically, the Pacific Plate subducts beneath the North American Plate along the Aleutian Arc, generating frequent earthquakes from the western Aleutian Islands extending toward mainland Alaska. Continuous monitoring of this region is essential due to its persistent seismic activity, which varies in depth and intensity.

The Aleutian Arc as a Source of Regular Seismic Events

The Aleutian Arc spans a significant segment of the North Pacific, forming a principal plate boundary. The process known as subduction involves one tectonic plate moving beneath another, resulting in earthquakes at various depths—shallow, intermediate, and deep. Alaska endures thousands of earthquakes annually, many of which originate beneath or near the Aleutian Islands. Monitoring stations operated by the U.S. Geological Survey detect ground movements, enabling experts to locate, measure, and analyze seismic events.

The seismic history of the area includes notable large earthquakes. In 1957, a magnitude 8.6 quake affected the Andreanof Islands, while in 1965, the Rat Islands experienced a magnitude 8.7 event. Additionally, significant earthquakes struck around the Andreanof Islands in 1986 and 1996. Although these earthquakes varied in size and location from Saturday’s magnitude 5.0 event, they are all part of the broader seismic activity associated with the active tectonic boundary beneath the Aleutian chain.

Seismic Monitoring Networks Observe Alaska’s Earthquakes

Earthquakes across the Aleutians can originate from different parts of the tectonic system, including near the main plate boundary or within the descending Pacific Plate. Shallow quakes may also occur within the crust above the boundary. The U.S. Geological Survey maintains comprehensive seismic records and evaluates earthquake data across Alaska and nationwide. Regional networks supplement these efforts with detailed observations from stations located across the state’s extensive and remote terrain.

The recent magnitude 5.0 event adds to the ongoing seismic record of the Aleutian Islands. Its location southeast of Atka and its 17-kilometer depth highlight its primary characteristics. Seismic stations captured the seismic waves, enabling experts to refine the event’s parameters. Given Alaska’s vast geographic scope and the active tectonic boundary, continuous earthquake monitoring remains vital, especially for isolated island communities along the Aleutian chain.
