Federal Reserve and Treasury Department Influence Dollar’s Three-Month Lows with Falling Yields

    August 20, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. / RankWire.AI / – On Thursday, the U.S. dollar hovered near a three-month low as yields on long-term Treasury securities declined. The dollar index registered at 98.813 against a basket of six major currencies, approaching its lowest level since mid-May. Meanwhile, the euro increased to $1.1676, marking its highest level since late May. Currency markets also evaluated new measures from the U.S. Treasury and minutes from the Federal Reserve’s most recent policy meeting.

US dollar stays near three-month low as Treasury yields fall
US dollar trading remains in focus as Treasury yields ease and major currencies gain.

The Treasury Department revealed plans on Wednesday to expand liquidity-support buybacks for longer-term government bonds. The maximum size of eligible operations will at least double from $2 billion to $4 billion, covering nominal coupon securities in the 10-year to 20-year and 20-year to 30-year sectors. These larger buyback operations are scheduled to commence on September 9 and will continue until November 4, concluding the current quarterly refunding period.

Following the Treasury’s announcement, long-term U.S. government bond yields declined. The 30-year Treasury yield was approximately 5.184% on Thursday, after experiencing a sharp decrease during the previous trading session. Earlier this week, yields reached 5.337%, the highest since 2007. These yields impact borrowing costs across financial markets and can influence the demand for the dollar. The Treasury Department indicated that an updated tentative schedule for its buyback operations will be issued later.

Dollar Weakness Bolsters Major Currency Gains

A softer dollar contributed to gains in several key currencies during Asian trading. The Japanese yen rose to around 158.45 per dollar, having recently tested the closely watched 160 level. The British pound traded near $1.3604, close to a three-month high. The Swiss franc was near 0.7999 per dollar. The euro also maintained levels above $1.16 as the dollar index stayed below 99. These currency moves followed a broader decline in the U.S. dollar during the prior session.

Minutes from the Federal Reserve’s July 28 and 29 meeting published Wednesday revealed ongoing concerns about inflation at the central bank. The Federal Open Market Committee decided to hold the benchmark federal funds rate within the range of 3.5% to 3.75%. Nine members supported maintaining the current rate, while three members favored a quarter-point increase. Officials noted that inflation remained above the Fed’s 2% target, even as U.S. economic activity continued its steady expansion.

Inflation Remains a Central Focus in Fed Minutes

The record of the meeting indicated several policymakers were inclined to raise interest rates in July. Many participants also suggested that higher borrowing costs might be necessary if inflation did not move closer to the 2% goal. The Federal Reserve continued its policy of maintaining ample reserves in the banking system and rolled over principal payments from its Treasury holdings at auction. The central bank’s next scheduled policy gathering is set for September 15 and 16.

Thursday’s dollar trading reflected the combined effects of lower long-term Treasury yields and the latest signals from U.S. monetary policy. The dollar index lingered near its lowest point in approximately three months. Meanwhile, the 30-year yield stayed below the 19-year high reached earlier this week. The Treasury’s expanded buyback programs will begin next month, while the Federal Reserve has kept its policy rate unchanged. These developments continue to be central to current trading in the U.S. dollar and government bond markets.
