U.S. National Park Service euthanizes black bear at Grand Teton due to food habituation issues

    September 18, 2026

WYOMING / RankWire.AI / – Grand Teton National Park authorities made the decision to euthanize a black bear near Delta Lake after its repeated access to human food altered its behavior. The park reported that the animal often approached visitors and became increasingly difficult for wildlife personnel to deter. Officials concluded that the bear’s ongoing food rewards and close interactions posed an unacceptable safety threat to the public. The bear was tranquilized and euthanized at the remote backcountry site on September 11, prior to its carcass being flown out of the area by wildlife staff.

Grand Teton euthanizes black bear after food access
Grand Teton urges visitors to keep human food away from bears and follow wildlife rules.

Earlier reports in 2026 indicated that park personnel had received sightings of a black bear approaching people near Delta Lake. At that time, there was insufficient data to confirm if the animal had become conditioned to food. However, the situation changed in the days leading up to the bear’s removal, with officials noting the bear had repeatedly accessed human food and continued to approach visitors. Despite increased monitoring and hazing efforts by wildlife staff, the bear grew more persistent in remaining near humans.

Photographs released by Grand Teton depict visitors standing just feet from the bear in the vicinity of Delta Lake. Other images captured the animal investigating unattended food and gear among rocks, trees, and logs. Authorities emphasized that visitors should never leave food unattended, even temporarily, and advised them to gather their belongings promptly if a bear approaches. The bear’s carcass was transported out of the backcountry the morning after it was euthanized.

Impact of human food on bear behavior

The National Park Service highlights food conditioning as a serious wildlife management concern, since bears can learn to associate people with food sources. This behavior often results in bears approaching campsites, trails, picnic areas, and other locations frequented by visitors. In this instance, park officials said that the bear’s repeated access to food, close approaches, and resistance to hazing indicated that this concern was valid. After evaluating the bear’s behavior and possible management strategies, authorities determined that lethal removal was necessary.

While relocating bears remains a potential conflict management tool, the park notes that moving an animal does not always resolve the issue. Bears can return to their established territories or encounter other bears after relocation. Additionally, suitable areas with natural food sources and limited human activity are often scarce. In this case, wildlife managers found all other options exhausted and determined that the bear posed a direct safety threat. The park describes lethal removal as a last resort.

    Park emphasizes bear safety protocols

Grand Teton National Park continues to alert visitors that both black bears and grizzlies remain active within the park boundaries. Current regulations mandate maintaining at least 100 yards distance from bears, with backcountry travelers advised to move in groups, make noise, and carry bear spray. Visitors are also instructed to secure food and scented items immediately when not in use. These rules are designed to prevent bears from becoming conditioned to human food and developing behaviors that could threaten people or wildlife.

According to the National Park Service, Grand Teton typically removes about one or two bears each year after other management strategies fail. Most of these are black bears. Officials state that removal occurs only when a bear poses an obvious risk to human safety and all other options have been considered. The incident at Delta Lake has renewed focus on proper food storage and wildlife viewing guidelines for backcountry visitors. Park staff continue to urge visitors to report bear sightings and to adhere to recommended safe distances during encounters.
